Turmeric
Curcuma longa
Turmeric is a bright yellow, powerful rhizome that is commonly used in Indian and Asian cuisine. It is native to South Asia and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine, and as a natural dye for more than 2,000 years. Turmeric is believed to have many medicinal uses due to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties.
In Chinese herbalism, it is used for bruises, sores, ringworm, toothache, chest pains, colic, and menstrual problems.
Turmeric essential oil is extracted by steam distillation. It is a yellowy-orange liquid.
It is used in aromatherapy as an aid to circulation, muscles & joints, and digestion.
Safety Information: use in moderation and with care, for a fairly limited period. Turmeric essential oil contains a ketone (tumerone) which ould cause possible sensitization problems in high concentrations.
